A once much-loved pub near Aspley Marina will be demolished to make way for a £2m redvelopment.

Bal Khela, owner of The New Wharf, formerly Dr Browns Ale & Wine Bar, on the corner of Firth Street and Wakefield Road at Aspley, has been granted permission to demolish the derelict pub and erect a three-storey student accommodation block with rooftop garden.

Sam Hough, of Acumen Designers and Architects Ltd, said: “We are pleased to secure a detailed planning consent and look forward to receiving further instruction from our client to commence the development phase.”

Huddersfield businessman Mr Khela said the development which will also include five luxury, self-contained flats on the ground floor, would be environmentally-friendly with solar panels.

He said the accommodation would house getting on for around 90 students when it opens in 2015-16.

He said: “The students will be able to get out of bed and get to their lectures within minutes as university is close by. It’s going to be a fantastic, eye-catching building and you can’t get any closer, physically to the university.”

The pub has been closed and boarded up for several years.
