THE newly-renovated Hope Pit at the National Coal Mining Museum has received a National Lottery blue plaque.

The plaque - seen being made - was given to the museum, at Overton, near Flockton, to celebrate the difference it has made to young people's understanding Yorkshire's heritage.

The renovation in May 2005 was made possible after a National Lottery grant of almost £1 million from the Heritage Lottery fund.

Baroness Lockwood, museum chairman, said: "The money that the National Lottery has invested has allowed us to renovate the historic buildings.

"Hope Pit provides visitors with a unique insight into how the mine ran."
