YOUNGSTERS went striding out at the McAlpine Stadium - to publicise the benefits of a good, brisk walk.

Pupils from Longley School and Ashbrow Junior and Infant School, Sheepridge, walked around the pitch a number of times as part of a health campaign. They were joined on the walk by Huddersfield Town players Ian Hughes, Efe Sodje and Rob Edwards.

Kirklees Council Leisure and Recreation Services has joined forces with supermarket chain Asda to promote the Walk Your Way to Health scheme.

It is part of a national campaign to persuade more people to take regular walks to improve their health.

Helen Heaton, of leisure services, said: "Walking is great fun, really sociable when it involves a group and is a cheap way of keeping fit.

"The benefits of regular walking are enormous. It helps to reduce weight, controls blood pressure, prevents diabetes, improves muscle strength and reduces anxiety and depression."

The campaign will also promote the Kirklees Walk Leaders Network, a group of 120 trained volunteers who lead weekly walks throughout the district.
