ONLOOKERS are being urged to follow safety advice when a fireworks display lights up Huddersfield's town centre tonight.

Performers travelling from Spain will stage a procession of sparklers, firecrackers and Roman candles.

The finale will involve building a spectacular structure, inspired by the artist Miro, which is then set on fire.

Organisers will relay a safety plea to the crowds.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: "In Spain they don't use barriers to keep people away from fireworks, they use commonsense.

"We'd like to think people in Huddersfield can do the same and keep their distance."

The event at 7pm in St George's Square follows the switch-on of the town's Christmas lights.

Only Fools And Horses star John Challis, alias Boycie, will be one of the celebrity guests, with Huddersfield Giants' New Zealand international Robbie Paul.

The switch-on is at 6pm in the Piazza followed by the Kingsgate shopping centre lights at 6.30pm.

A Christmas market will run until Sunday in Victoria Lane, behind the public library.
