A HOMELESS man died a week after he was the victim of a motiveless attack in Huddersfield town centre.

The 60-year-old man's death is not linked to injuries he suffered when he was shoved off a seat, but police are anxious to catch his attacker.

The man - who has not been named - shuffled along using a zimmer frame.

He was found unconscious on a bench on Upperhead Row in Huddersfield town centre by police at 9am last Saturday. He was taken by ambulance to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary but was dead on arrival.

A Home Office pathologist carried out a post-mortem examination and certified the cause of death as a chest infection and chronic alcoholism.

Police have revealed that he suffered face and head injuries when he was pushed off a seat in a bus shelter on Westgate in Huddersfield town centre at about 9.50pm a week last Saturday. He was taken to the casualty department at the Infirmary suffering from cuts, grazes, bruises and swelling. He was allowed to leave after treatment.

Det Insp Ian Devey, of Kirklees CID, said: "The victim was a vulnerable member of society who was doing nothing wrong.

"The thuggish behaviour he suffered was totally unnecessary and we would really like to trace the man responsible."

The victim was in a bus shelter outside the Crown pub when the attacker - who is thought to have just had a row with his girlfriend - pushed him off his seat, causing him to bang his head.

Det Insp Devey added: "We think the woman then got on a bus in Westgate and got off at the Bay Horse roundabout in Lindley.

"We very much need her to come forward and talk to us.

"The man was also seen later on the same evening in Lidget Street near to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary."

The attacker was white, aged 18 to 20, 5ft 9in and wore a white jumper with a large diamond pattern.

Det Insp Devey urged anyone who was in the area around the Crown pub in Westgate that Saturday night and may be able to help police with their inquiries to ring Kirklees CID on 01484 436685, or the helpdesk at Huddersfield Police Station on 01484 436659.
