A WILDLIFE organisation is asking people to ‘feed the birds’ as part of a project to create havens for the animals.

Bird protection charity Royal Society for the Protection of Birds are launching a Feed the Birds Day.

They hope it will get people to think about the ways of helping wildlife living in their gardens.

Matthew Capper from the RSPB in Denby Dale said: “We want people to let their gardens go a bit wild - just leaving a small area of long grass will encourage insects and provide food for birds.”

The society is also launching a Homes for Wildlife project, hoping people will provide an area for birds to live in their gardens.

“You really don’t need to be an expert to take part in Homes for Wildlife and you can do as little or as much as you have time for,” Matthew added. “Just providing a little food, water and shelter can really help birds and turn your garden into a wildlife heaven for you to enjoy.”

Feed the Birds Day will take place on Saturday, October 27. For more information visit www.rspb.org.uk/hfw
