HUNDREDS of children in Kirklees took part in a day of sports, art and games to mark National Playday.

They were able to climb trees, make obstacle courses and take part in sports sessions.

Children from Headfield Junior School in Dewsbury led the special games day, which was part of a series of events to encourage young children to play out more.

There were similar events at the Thornhills Lees multi-court sports area and at Overthorpe and Holroyd parks.

Events included various sports, such as football and cricket, arts and craft activities.

The day of play was organised to get youngsters out of the house.

Organisers wanted to give youngsters the chance to be adventurous.

It came after a survey revealed that 51% of children are not allowed to climb a tree without adult supervision.

Adrian Voce, organiser of the activities, said: “Playing is an essential part of growing up.

“Children need and want to push their boundaries in order to explore their limits and develop their abilities.

“Constantly wrapping children in cotton wool can leave them ill-equipped to deal with stressful or challenging situations they might encounter later.”
