Poetry is seen by many as a leisurely affair but not for Calderdale poet laureate Gez Walsh who has broken a world record for his performance speed.

Gez definitely put his rhyming skills and fitness to the test after he took on a whistle stop poetry reading tour across 11 schools to get the crown of most performances by a poet in schools in one day.

Battling against short school days and bad weather, he gave hundreds of primary school children a blink and you’ll miss it event to remember, which he organised to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

Paddock Juniors were the second to see his speedy set in which he rattled off six poems from his latest book, Spot on my Bum, to entertain crowds of pupils.

Deputy head teacher, Sallie Lumb, said: “He was fantastic. Obviously he had to rush off but he managed to read so many and children thought it was hilarious.”

Royds Hall , Moorlands Primary, Moldgreen Junior, St Joseph’s, Dalton Junior, Honley Juniors, Helme Primary, Hade Edge Juniors, Holmfirth High and Scissett Infants were the other lucky schools to help Gez reach his ambitious target.
