A POETRY lecturer and former student of Huddersfield University has been appointed this year's Fellow in Creative Writing at Leeds University.

The appointment is an annual conferment and is Huddersfield poet Peter Sansom's third poetry residency.

Previously, he has been poet-in-residence for retail giant Marks and Spencer and is currently resident poet for leading financial services group, Prudential plc.

Mr Sansom's Leeds University fellowship started this month.

It will entail some teaching, student consultation work and giving the occasional poetry reading.

He completed his undergraduate degree and doctorate at the Huddersfield University and eventually taught on the university's master's degree course in poetry for 10 years.

He still contributes to the university's undergraduate poetry and short story modules and runs poetry workshops for the first-year students in the Department of English.

In 1986, Peter founded and is still co-director of The Poetry Business, a poetry publishing company with its base in Huddersfield's Byram Arcade.

The company also publishes literary magazine, The North.
