AN AMBITIOUS project by Marsden poet Simon Armitage airs on national television tonight. Songbirds is a musical documentary focusing on inmates at the female prison Downview, in Surrey. It is the follow-up to Simon's award-winning 2002 Feltham Signs made a Feltham young offenders' institute. Inmates talk about their prison lives and how they ended up behind bars before bursting into song. The 42-year-old poet and former prison officer wrote all the lyrics for songs he describes as "desperately sad" and "uplifting".
