MOTORISTS drove past a terrified woman as she pleaded for help after an attack, it emerged last night.

And detectives believe the drivers may hold the key to their attempted murder enquiry.

Police are continuing to appeal for information after the 27-year-old woman was found shortly after midnight on Sunday in a distressed state near the Woodsome Hall Golf Club at Fenay Bridge.

They have revealed that several cars passed the victim in Woodsome Road while she was trying to ask for help, but failed to stop.

They want any of those drivers or anyone who saw the woman near to the woodland to come forward. They also want to hear from anyone who saw a Vauxhall Astra in the area, or saw anything suspicious in Penistone Road, less than two miles from the woodland.

Last night, police confirmed a 25-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth had been charged with attempted murder and kidnap.

Two other people, a 49-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman, have been released on bail pending further police inquiries.

It is believed that the woman was taken from a detached house on Penistone Road at some time during the evening on Saturday, May 28, and dumped in the woodland near the golf club.

Detectives say she was probably transported in a Vauxhall Astra.

The woman suffered minor injuries and received some medical treatment.

Enquiries into how the woman came to be in the woodland are still ongoing and forensic examinations are continuing of the areas and on two cars recovered by police.

A large cardboard box found in the woods could also hold vital clues, as it is believed the woman was carried to and from a car in the box.

The inquiry is being led by Det Chief Insp Lisa Griffin, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team.

She said: “A dedicated team of detectives are still trying to piece together how the woman came to be in a dishevelled state near to the woodland.

“Enquiries and forensic examinations are continuing in order to establish exactly what happened to her and I would now like to turn my appeal to drivers who were travelling along Woodsome Road after 11pm on Saturday night.

“We believe that the woman tried to stop a number of motorists to ask for help, however she failed to do so until just after midnight.

“We also believe now she could have been transported in a Vauxhall Astra. It is important that anyone who may have seen the woman or the car comes forward to speak to me.”
