POLICE shut the M1 in both directions today after a man threatened to jump from a bridge. 

The busy motorway was closed at 8.40am between junctions 37 and 38 at Woolley after a man was seen on a bridge above the carriageways. 

The bridge is about 300 yards north of junction 37. 

It reopened at 11am but left huge tailbacks.

Police officers went on to the bridge and were in negotiations with the man, who in his 50s.

He was later arrested and removed from the scene.
