A POLICE blitz on car crime villains has led to 220 arrests across West Yorkshire in two weeks.

The latest figures in the month-long Steer Clear anti- vehicle crime campaign includes 167 arrests for allegedly stealing vehicles and 50 for alleged theft from vehicles.

The county-wide campaign started on St Valentine's Day, using a series of methods.

These included a roadside computer system, Automatic Number Plate Recognition, which shows up stolen cars and those linked to crime immediately.

The campaign has also warned people who falsely report they have been a crime victim to make a fraudulent insurance claim that they will be caught.

Assistant Chief Constable David Crompton said: "We've been working hard to warn the region's motorists and criminals to steer clear of vehicle crime with an intensive programme of operations and crime prevention work covering the whole force area.

"These results are very encouraging and reflect our determination to reduce offences and catch those responsible. The impact is very reassuring."
