A mum-of-three claims staff at a Huddersfield shop called the police as a “smokescreen” when she went in demanding a refund.

Hazel Corr, 23, of Birkby, bought two children’s beds from iSleep in New Street.

But when the beds were delivered late on Saturday night, both were different from what she had ordered, both were scuffed and one stank of urine.

When her attempts to sort out her complaint on the phone failed, she went back to the shop on Sunday morning.

Mrs Corr, who has three children Thaine, six, Luscia, three, and 19-month-old Grayson, said she was perfectly within her rights to reject the beds and ask for her £150 back.

But staff in the shop refused to help so she told them she wasn’t leaving until they sorted the matter out.

Shop staff called police who attended at 11.30am.

Mrs Corr, married to Antony, said she was shocked when staff told the officers she had been abusive and had tried to snatch money from the till.

Mrs Corr said: “The man in the shop said I was not allowed to demand a refund.

“He said they would have offered me an alternative but because I’d gone into the shop they weren’t going to help me.”

Mrs Corr said she couldn’t believe it when the police were told she tried to take money from the till.

“That’s just not true,” she said. “I wasn’t abusive or anything like that. I had my three-year-old daughter with me. I wouldn’t have done anything to upset her.”

Mrs Corr said police listened to both sides and decided no crime had been committed.

Officers told her the dispute was a civil matter and she was advised to leave the shop and take up her complaint with West Yorkshire Trading Standards.

Mrs Corr said delivery of the beds was promised between 4pm and 8pm on Saturday but they arrived at 9.30pm.

“It was late and the children were tired and we had sold their beds,” said Mrs Corr.

“We noticed that the beds weren’t what we ordered but the driver said to just take them and they would sort it out later.”

The bases of the two beds were wrong and there was some scuffing.

One bed had a different design to that ordered and the other had a different headboard.

One smelled of urine.

The couple were forced to disinfect the bed and use them as Thaine and Luscia had nowhere else to sleep.

“We are now stuck with beds we didn’t order,” said Mrs Corr. “We paid £150 in cash and don’t have the money to buy new beds somewhere else.”

The family have reported what happened to Trading Standards. They have been advised to write requesting a refund.

Staff gave the couple a number for “our Dewsbury head office” which dealt with complaints.

The Examiner rang the number which went through to HC Business Solutions near Wakefield.

Company boss Rod Campbell said his firm had carried out some legal work for iSleep but had no connection to the business.

“Our number has been incorrectly given,” he said. “We have had a few of these calls, some from as far afield as London, but it’s nothing to do with us.”

The Examiner was told that Shazam Hussain was a director of iSleep but calls to his mobile went straight to voicemail.

A man who said he worked in the shop contacted the Examiner and insisted Mrs Corr had been abusive and tried to take money from the till.

He said the shop had been prepared to change one of the beds on Tuesday but Mrs Corr refused to accept delivery.

He said they were unable to give a refund until the beds were returned.

He could not say whether Mrs Corr would receive a refund and we asked to speak to Mr Hussain.

A police spokesman confirmed that police were called to reports that someone was trying to take money from the till at the shop.

Officers decided it was a civil matter and no further action was taken.
