Police have been clamping down on people making a nuisance of themselves in Huddersfield town centre.

A recent day of action targeted beggars, street drinkers and thieves and was aimed at ‘cleaning up’ the streets for the summer.

Officers, supported by special constables, made three arrests for shoplifting, one for theft of a mobile phone and one for begging.

They also moved on one busker whose street permit had expired and two more buskers who were the subject of complaints from shopkeepers.

Booze was also confiscated from eight street drinkers, with one given a legal direction to leave an area.

Meanwhile, volunteers handed out anti-purse dipping ‘bells’ to residents and provided advice to shoppers on what they could do to protect themselves from pickpockets.

Town centre car parks were also checked by Kirklees Council staff to help deter drug use and anti-social behaviour.

Sergeant Mandy Mellor, of Huddersfield Police, said: “I want to thank partners for their assistance and support on what proved to be a very successful day in which everyone played their part to make the town centre that bit safer.

“Officers made a number of arrests and I hope we have sent a message to pickpockets, shoplifters and anti social drinkers that we know who they are and we will be taking action to disrupt them this summer.”

She added: “Huddersfield is a pleasant place to come shopping and we will be working with partners during the summer months to ensure it stays that way.”

Anyone with information about anti-social behaviour or crime in the town centre should contact Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.
