THE M62 was partly closed last night as snow hit the area.

Police shut all three lanes of the eastbound carriageway at Junction 21 Milnrow because of a broken-down lorry blocking one lane in blizzard conditions.

Traffic was brought to a standstill on the M62 westbound and rush hour commuters faced delays of more than three hours.

Queues were backed up as far as Junction 28 for Leeds.

According a police spokesman, it was due to the sudden fall of snow and a lane closure between Junction 23 and 21.

Traffic was diverted on the A640 and A672.

A moorland road in Holmfirth was also shut by police as snow brought problems.

Officers closed the A6024 over Holme Moss for two hours yesterday lunchtime after it was blanketed by three inches of snow.

And they warned drivers out and about over the weekend to take care – and to make sure they were prepared for the weather.

The warning came after a woman called police to say she was stranded on the snowbound Holme Moss road and had no coat.

Sgt Paul Denton, of West Yorkshire Police, said that officers reported rainfall and temperatures of 3 deg in Holmbridge while at the top of Holme Moss there were three inches of snow and temperatures below freezing.

Kirklees Council had a full gritting team out on priority roads last night and were expected to be out again today.
