A COUPLE who met while serving in the police force have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Arthur and Phyllis Smith of Skelmanthorpe, met while working at Pontefract police station. They married at Arksey Church in Doncaster on June 17,1950.

Prior to joining the police force Mrs Smith served in the Second World War, plotting plane movements. Mr Smith served with the military police in Germany.

After they married the couple lived in Doncaster before moving to Skelmanthorpe.

Mrs Smith left the police to raise the couple’s two children while her husband became a policeman in Huddersfield, in the traffic department.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with family and friends.

They had two children: a son, Chris, and a daughter,Annette, who recently died from cancer.

Mr and Mrs Smith have four grandchildren and both enjoy walking. Mrs Smith likes painting and drawing, while her husband enjoys joinery.
