POLICE hunting for a 10-year-old girl reported missing late last night have found a body.
The youngster was reported missing from her home in Leigh, Greater Manchester, at 10.13 last night.
The girl was named locally as Lauren Pilkington, who lived with her parents at Twist Lane.
One neighbour said that she went to nearby Leigh Church of England Junior School.
A police search was launched and the body was discovered at about 2.30 this morning in the Sanderson Street area of Leigh.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Inquiries are continuing and investigations are at an early stage."
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "At approximately 10.13pm last night, police in Wigan rec- eived reports a 10-year-old girl had gone missing from the Leigh area.
"Following this report police launched a search for the girl. At approximately 2.30am this morning a body was discovered in the Sanderson Street area of Leigh.
"We can now confirm that it was a child's body that was found in the street.
"At this stage this is being treated as suspicious. It does not appear to be an accident."
Sanderson Street, which is about 100 yards long and runs from Twist Lane to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, was blocked off this morning.
Lauren's neighbour, a woman who did not want to be identified, said: "She was a lovely little girl who was really chatty and very well liked in the area.
"It is such a shame and we are all in a state of shock.
"She was only a tiny dainty thing and it didn't look like she was 10.
"She looked a lot younger.
"A lot of people in the area will be very upset today to hear the news. Our hearts go out to her family."
