IT was one of the easiest crimes to crack.
Because Christmas tree thieves left a trail of pine needles for police to follow.
All officers had to do was follow the green spikes for half a mile before they found the trees dumped in a garden.
Earlier this month trees and dozens of holly wreaths were stolen from Park House Nurseries in Spenborough – owned by John Dacre.
The thieves even stole two of Mr Dacre’s trollies to cart off their loot.
But Mr Dacre and police followed the trail of pine needles along the Spen Valley Ringway and across fields, stopping at a house in Firthcliffe where the officers found the trees.
Police also found a cannabis farm at the address.
A 17-year-old arrested on suspicion of burglary and cultivating cannabis is on police bail pending further inquiries.
