SPECIAL police teams raided dozens of Huddersfield homes today to track down fine-dodgers.

They were after many of the 625 people who owe tens of thousands of pounds in fines and compensation.

And Huddersfield magistrates set up a special court to deal with the defaulters.

Operation Payback was part of a nationwide Government plan to reduce the huge amount owing in fines.

Huddersfield was chosen as one of the first areas to run the scheme because of its success in a similar operation last year.

At dawn, 19 teams of police and fines enforcement officers left Huddersfield police headquarters after a briefing to start tracking down the defaulters.

Sgt John McFadzean, of the Neighbourhood Policing team, said: "We have warrants for 625 individuals in Huddersfield.

"We were aiming to catch up with many of them today.

"These people owe the courts £127,500 and we are determined to ensure they do not get away with it," he added.

"There are a lot of people who are flouting sentences imposed by the courts and we are determined they will pay.

"Magistrates have set up a special court from 9am and we will take people before them as quickly as we can.

"We will repeat this operation as necessary."

The sergeant added: "My message to those who do not pay their fines is: We will catch up with you."
