A SLEEPING teenager had a lucky escape when a fire started below his bedroom.

The blaze began in rubbish in a passageway below the boy’s bedroom, in The Avenue, Moldgreen, at around 11am yesterday.

Huddersfield fire crews using breathing apparatus and jet hoses extinguished the fire which had started to spread to the bedroom.

The room suffered smoke damage and damage to the floorboards.

Police were yesterday investigating the cause of the fire.

Huddersfield Fire Station Watch Manager David Price said: “It could have been very serious. It should be a warning not to leave rubbish in passageways and to secure your property.

“Luckily we’d installed a smoke alarm in there a few weeks ago.

“If anyone would like a free home risk assessment and smoke alarm they can call us on 01484 551 800.”
