Detectives are investigating reports that a gun was fired as rival gangs clashed in a secluded lane near homes in Dalton.

Police were called to Standiforth Lane at around 9pm on Saturday following reports of a gunshot.

The distrubance is thought to have involved several men, two cars and a shotgun, although this is yet to be confirmed by police.

The alley, which runs next to Standiforth Recreation Ground, was cordoned off on Saturday night.

A neighbour said: “I’d heard there were four lads, one of them had a shotgun and they were looking for someone.”

Another resident said: “We heard there were two cars involved.
