HOME Secretary Charles Clarke has suffered a body blow after police authorities rejected his plans for a single superforce to cover Yorkshire. He had given them until Friday night to respond to his nationwide proposals. The Government says the mergers would make it easier to fight terrorism and organised crime.
The West Yorkshire Police Authority said a merger was not in the best interests of the region's people. A spokesman said: "There is still too much uncertainty about the costs and benefits of merging."
