MORE police on the beat, rather than floods of expensive and bureaucratic orders, are the only way to stamp out yobbish behaviour, say local Tories.

Kirklees Council's Conservative group will bring a motion to the council meeting next Wednesday calling on the Government to review its policies for dealing with anti-social behaviour.

Although 25 Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (Asbos) have been imposed in Kirklees since they came into effect in 1999, Conservatives said unruly behaviour remained rife on the district's streets.

Group leader Clr Robert Light said: "Crime and anti-social behaviour remains out of control under Labour and Asbos have not been the answer to the problem.

"The bureaucracy involved in obtaining them ensures local authorities see them as a last resort.

"In one case in London recently it cost the Metropolitan Police £100,000 and seven months to obtain a single order. That's just madness."

Local authorities who have been slow to impose the orders will be sent Home Office experts - dubbed Asbo ambassadors - who will encourage more use of the orders against out-of-control individuals and gangs.

But the Tories ridiculed the idea.

Clr Light said: "Asbos have had limited impact on crime and anti-social behaviour in reducing hooliganism and street crime.

"If we are to tackle issues such as these - as well as drugs , lack of discipline in schools and truancy - among our youths, and if we are to promote more discipline in our communities, what we need is more police," he added.
