A TANNING shop has been destroyed by a mystery blast.

Sleeping residents of Stainland Road in West Vale were rocked awake just before 2.30am by a huge explosion.

Fire crews attended and discovered the front of the Sunkist tanning salon had exploded, showering the road with shards of glass.

Chairs and other furnishings had been thrown a dozen feet by the blast.

Fire crews from Elland and Halifax tackled the fire which followed the explosion.

Elland firefighter Kevin Scrimshaw said: "The salon is in a row of shops and there were people living above the shops.

"Fortunately no-one has been hurt.

"We got there in three minutes and there was just glass all over the road with chairs and soft furnishings having been blown out.

"Fire was licking at the ceiling of the shop and we used one large jet of water and two firefighters with breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.

"The shop was completely destroyed."

The road was closed until just before 6am as firefighters and fire investigation teams examined the wrecked shop to find out what caused the blast.

Police scenes of crime forensic teams were also helping with the inquiry.

The incident is now the subject of a police investigation.
