A derelict mill was gutted in a suspicious blaze.

Firefighters from Rastrick and Cleckheaton were amongst five teams sent to tackle huge flames at the one-storey building on Badger Lane in Hipperholme.

They, plus teams from Halifax, Illingworth and Fairweather Green, were called out at 8.30pm on Wednesday night after a passerby spotted the fire coming out of the roof.

It was dampened down and finally extinguished but the roof was totally destroyed.

Talking about the incident, Elliott Webster, crew commander from Rastrick, said: “We believe it was deliberately started and that police are now investigating.

“I don’t think that the mill will have to be pulled down.

“I would just like to warn people of the danger of playing in derelict mills.

“They are dangerous.”
