A CRIME crackdown across West Yorkshire has led to 115 arrests in Kirklees.

West Yorkshire police have released new figures after a second week of action under Operation Target's Winter Crime Crackdown.

A total of 551 arrests have been made across the county for a variety of crimes and 25 stolen cars have been recovered, thanks to automatic number plate recognition checkpoints, which included sites on Wakefield Road at Moldgreen.

Across the Huddersfield and Dewsbury divisions 35 people were arrested on outstanding warrants, 14 for burglary, five for drug offences, one for robbery, two for traffic offences, 34 for vehicle crime, one for violent crime, nine for other crimes and 14 for driving offences.

The operation focused on travelling criminals.

During the course of the week the force's daily average for vehicle crime detections rose from 14 to 18.

A massive countywide operation kicked off the crime-fighting campaign last December.

It resulted in more than 400 arrests and a significant reduction in the number of crimes reported.

Hundreds of officers took part in the crackdown, using planned arrests and high-profile policing operations to disrupt criminal activity and find prolific offenders.

The end of the second phase brings the arrest total to almost 1,000.

West Yorkshire Assistant Chief Constable John Sampson said: "The aim of the Winter Crime Crackdown was to support recent reductions in priority crime, especially robbery, burglary and vehicle crime.

"It has succeeded in doing just that.

"Despite our recent success we are by no means complacent.

"Winter may be coming to an end, but our pressure on criminals is not," he added.

"We are committed to maintaining our impact on crime. Further operations of this kind will continue well into the spring."
