A MANHUNT in Gledholt woodland on Wednesday night was triggered by a police chase.

The chase ended with a man fleeing into TP Woods after jumping out of a Green Vauxhall Astra which had been damaged after two collisions during the course of the prusuit.

Police today revealed that the man failed to stop for police in St Thomas Road around 6pm.

The marked police car gave chase as officers wanted to speak to the man in connection with drugs offences.

In a statement police said the Astra was followed and ran red lights at the bottom of St Thomas Road before turning onto Longroyd Lane.

The pursuit continued to Greenhead Road where officers lost sight of the vehicle after it crashed through barriers at the junction of Greenhead and Park Avenue.

When the car was seen again, it had crashed into a black Ford Focus close to the junction of Gledholt Road and Greenhead Road.

The driver had run from the Astra and an ambulance was called to give medical  assistance to a toddler in the Ford  Focus.

Enquiries to trace the suspect took officers to a house on Cross Cottages,  Marsh where a 49-year old woman was arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.

She was later bailed pending further enquiries.

The man who ran from the Astra is described as black with dreadlocks and was wearing a red top and dark bottoms.

Earlier this week, a BMW ended up on its roof in Grange Moor and two men were detained in hospital after it failed to stop when challenged by officer in  Wakefield and was pursued along Wakefield Road for several miles by a marked police car.
