Police underwater divers recovered an air rifle from a pond in Birkby .

The team were sent to Middlemost Pond near Old Halifax Road to assist detectives to search the area.

The search comes after three suspects resisted arrest and were spotted discarding an item which resembled a shot gun in the pond on Sunday night.

Specialist underwater search teams were called in from Humberside to search the pond which is tucked behind a newly built residential housing estate.

Residents watched as plain-clothed officers gathered their equipment from an unmarked van and walked the short distance to the pond which is not accessed directly by road.

Divers then entered the water and used yellow search lines to trace the route of the pond.

Det Insp Ian Thornes said: “Underwater search teams were called to assist in an on-going investigation regarding three males who were spotted discarding an item in the pond.

“The suspects had been in Arnold Avenue at 8.20pm and were pursued by officers on foot.”

Certain kinds of air weapons must be held on a firearms licence and any such weapons with self-contained gas cartridge system is prohibited.
