TWO police officers had to put their training into practice when their car ended up hanging over a wall with a steep drop underneath.

The male and female officers from Greater Manchester Police were setting off for work from their Longwood home when the driver left the car to return inside, putting on the handbrake.

He returned to find the back of the vehicle teetering over the edge of a retaining wall, above a 5ft drop.

Huddersfield firefighters were called to the scene.

Leading Firefighter Bryan Rowley said that at first they thought the man and woman in uniform who were holding down the front of the bonnet were helping.

It wasn't until later they realised it was their own car.

"The car was in a dangerous position and could have careered down on to houses below," he said.

"It was only the weight of the engine that was counter-balancing it."

Firefighters used a special winch to tow the car to safety.
