A £1M drugs ring has been smashed – by police who stopped a man on a scooter.

The officers were travelling back from Huddersfield to Dewsbury when they pulled over a 42-year-old man on Highgate Lane, Mirfield.

They arrested him after finding two big bags of cannabis and amphetamine stashed on the scooter.

Police then raided a house in Headfield Road, Dewsbury, and recovered drugs estimated to have a street value of £1.2m.

A 23-year-old man was also arrested from outside the house.

He was charged with possession with intent to supply cannabis and cocaine.

The 42-year-old man was charged with possession with intent to supply cannabis and amphetamine.

He has also been charged with money laundering offences. Both are to appear in court at a later date.

Kirklees Police spokesman Det Chief Insp Dave Knopwood, said: "This find simply came about as a result of routine police patrols and officers taking it personally in their area.

“The diligence of the officers who were travelling from Huddersfield back to Dewsbury has resulted in two men appearing at court and over a million pounds worth of drugs being removed from the streets of Kirklees.

“The intuition and swift actions of the officers shows the commitment in all departments of Kirklees police to tackle drugs related crime head on.

“The Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team have also been conducting leaflet drops and speaking with members of the community to offer reassurance.

“With the support of the public and the information they provide we can maintain pressure on the people selling misery within our neighbourhoods.”
