Police have revealed that the body recovered from the River Calder on Good Friday is that of a man.

But they have still to formally identify him detectives said today.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to the River Calder off Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, about 3pm on March 25 to a report the body of a man had been seen in water there.

“Officers attended and recovered the body of a man.”

There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances regarding his death.

The discovery was made in the River Calder between Mirfield and Cooper Bridge by a member of the public.

A police source said one line of enquiry was trying to discover if he was a North Yorkshire resident.

He was the third person to die in the waterways in the Huddersfield and Kirklees area in just less than two weeks.

The Good Friday inquiry came just 48 hours after police were called to the Calder and Hebble Navigation canal at Slaithwaite Road, Thornhill Lees, following reports a 77-year-old man had fallen into the water.

He was rescued but despite the best efforts of paramedics sadly died in hospital later the same day.

And the body of a 19-year-old man was recovered from Huddersfield Broad Canal on Vine Street near Leeds Road on March 17.

He was later named by police as Hamza Amer from Batley.

Meanwhile detectives are still trying to determine the identity of a man found close to the canal in Ravesnthorpe.

His body was found in a wooded area a few yards from the Calder and Hebble Navigation off Low Mills Road on March 14.

It is thought the man may have been dead at the site for some considerable time and police have issued photographs of his clothing in a bid to try and identify him.
