Police towed away a car causing an obstruction on the main road near Mirfield Railway Station.

The Examiner reported in December how commuters were causing chaos in Station Road and Back Station Road, Mirfield, by parking up on both sides of the road.

HGVs going to and from local firms have struggled to get through, causing a blockage for other traffic.

Now officers from the Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team were called in after a Renault was left partially blocking the access road to James Walker’s Holmebank Business Park.

It is understood a HGV was unable to turn in and caused traffic to back up.

Police called a recovery truck and took the car away for causing “unnecessary or wilful obstruction.”

Residents in nearby Southbrook Gardens had been locked in a ‘parking wars’ row with commuters leaving cars outside their homes.

The Mayor of Mirfield Clr Vivien Lees-Hamilton said the police and Kirklees Council were well aware of the problems but there was “no quick fix” solution.

“This has been coming for a while and is a culmination of what has been happening,” she said.

“There is no excuse for causing an obstruction and the outcome was inevitable. This should be a warning to others to think about where they leave their cars. We all have to be sensible.”

Local councillors and the Friends of Mirfield Railway Station are pressing the rail companies to fund new parking facilities for a busy station which now has a direct link to London.

Double yellow lines on Hopton New Road bridge are also being considered.
