A DETECTIVE welcomed the 11-year jail term handed out to a Huddersfield drug dealer.

Det Sgt Damian Roebuck, who heads a special Kirklees drugs team, said it sent out a tough message.

“I hope that this result shows just how determined West Yorkshire Police is to keeping drugs and guns from the streets of our communities.

“Zahid Ali was wanted for a number of serious offences, but now faces a long time in prison.

“Others like him, who think that they can deal in drugs and guns in this county, should take this result as a warning that we are committed to bringing the people responsible for such illegal trading to justice”.

Ali was linked to a man called Jasem Asakerh, known as “Mo”, who was murdered on Brook Street in Thornton Lodge on April 3, 2009.

The 28-year-old was shot dead as he sat in the back of a car in the early hours.

He and Ali had earlier faced charges of attempted kidnap and grievous bodily harm.

Police are still hunting for Mr Asakerh’s killer.
