A POLICE motorcyclist killed in a road crash has been named.

Pc Andy Winterburn, 43, died at the scene after he came off his bike at the Chain Bar roundabout in Cleckheaton, next to the M62, at 3.15pm on Wednesday.

No other vehicles are thought to have been involved.

Pc Winterburn lived in North Yorkshire and had served with West Yorkshire Police's Motorcycle Unit since October, 2001.

He joined West Yorkshire Police in 1979 and served in the Chapeltown and Killingbeck areas of Leeds, mainly in the traffic unit.

Chief Supt Derek Bonnard, of Operations Support, said: "Our thoughts at the moment are with Andy's family, who are obviously devastated.

"The officer worked in a small, close-knit team who are all extremely upset at the news and the untimely loss of their colleague.

"We are doing all we can to support his family and colleagues at this very difficult time."

Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn also paid tribute to Pc Winterburn.

He said: "The force has lost a dedicated and respected officer and friend. But our loss cannot be compared to that of Andy's family.

"Police officers are ordinary men and women doing an extraordinary job. Andy Winterburn's tragic loss reminds us how much we owe them all.

"At this time my thoughts and prayers are with all family members, friends and colleagues," he added.
