A MAN trashed a car – before being caught sitting inside clutching a picture of Jesus.

Ryszard Grabowski, of Whiteley Street in Milnsbridge, admitted criminal damage when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said the 41-year-old was witnessed attacking a Hyundai Getz parked on the same street.

He said: “At 8.30pm Mr Grabowski was seen by members of the public punching the rear driver’s side window.

“He then went to the front door and at that point moved off.”

However, Grabowski returned to the vehicle armed with a brick, used to smash the front driver’s side window.

The car alarm sounded and police arrived at the scene.

Mr Bozman said: “Mr Grabowski was sat in the passenger seat holding a picture of Jesus in his hand.”

Grabowski was arrested and interviewed.

He said that he had been hallucinating in his home, had run out and then caused damage to the vehicle.

The Huddersfield bench was told that he had no previous convictions, only a caution in December last year for damage.

Ian Whiteley, defending, said that his client was Polish and in the past had mental health issues.

He accepted that his client was found in “unusual circumstances” with his picture.

Mr Whiteley asked magistrates to treat the incident as a one-off and give jobless Grabowski a conditional discharge.

Magistrates agreed and imposed it for a year.
