A CHARITY which provides therapeutic rides for disabled people is appealing for volunteers.

Dial Wood Carriage Driving for the Disabled gives pony-drawn carriage rides to people of all ages and disabilities.

The organisation, based on the former site of New Hall Prison farm, Flockton, was established 10 years ago as part of national charity Riding for the Disabled.

In April 2008 Dial Wood became an independent charity with its own ponies Big Splash, Little Splash and Lucy and two carriages modified to accommodate wheelchairs.

As well as enjoying rides in the countryside, passengers are allowed to drive the ponies under supervision.

Dial Wood, which is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, will appear at Emley Show on August 1.

Trustee and carriage driver Christine Tagg said: “We create an environment that’s fun and educational. Visitors are working with ponies that are used to dealing with people with special needs so they are gentle and it’s very therapeutic.

“It’s good to gain a new skill and a sense of achievement. People, especially those with communication difficulties, build up a rapport with the ponies.

“We need volunteers to clean the stables, prepare the ponies, walk with the ponies and do general yard duties.”
