A company which specialises in disco parties for children wants a licence for alcohol until 1am.

Popkidz Ltd wants to host family parties from 41A Westbourne Road in Marsh, which lasts until 1am at weekends, 10pm weekdays and 11pm Sundays.

They also want to be allowed to serve alcohol until late.

But all three ward councillors and residents have objected, saying it would cause a public nuisance.

West Yorkshire Police and Environmental Services would want conditions if members of Kirklees Licensing Panel approve it when they meet on Monday.

Popkidz Ltd, based in Stainland, want a licence for the upper floor of a property in the main parade of shops in Marsh.

It is intended to be a children’s party venue with potential for hosting family parties and occasions such as birthdays and Christenings.

Clr Mehboob Khan, Greenhead ward member, has objected to the bid along with his fellow ward members Clrs Judith Hughes and Mohan Sokhal.

Clr Khan said they objected on the grounds of “potential for noise for adjoining neighbours, parking restrictions and nuisance due to close proximity to residential properties.”

Other objectors include the Marsh Community Forum, with chair Mark Davies saying: “The business currently operates as a children’s party venue, consequently it has no alcohol licence and the business does not operate late in the evening.

“This application has the effect of turning the venue into a nightclub - a late-night drinking establishment with music.

“This is a completely inappropriate use for the area.”

Residents have raised concerns about noise, litter and parking problems it would cause the residential area.

West Yorkshire Police have requested CCTV coverage and pre-booking for any events where alcohol will be sold.

The applicant said the venue would be used for children and family parties and will ask for proof of identification for anyone aged under 25.

They add they have been operating a music venue for “nearly four years with no issue”.

The licence will be considered at 10.45am on Monday at Huddersfield Town Hall.
