THE Poppy Appeal got a £500 boost from a fundraiser organised by the women’s section of Golcar Royal British Legion.

The event featured music from the Military Band of the Yorkshire regiment.

It was attended by the mayor of Kirklees, Clr Julie Stewart-Turner, along with standard bearers from both Golcar and Marsden.

Members of the women’s section are also packing shoe boxes with Christmas gifts which are to be sent to troops in Afghanistan.

Treasurer Madeline Bower said: “The women’s section in Golcar has more than 200 members and the fundraiser was very well attended.

“The shoeboxes are now being filled and we will be taking them to our county conference at the Methodist Mission in Huddersfield this Saturday.’’
