THE Royal British Legion in South and West Yorkshire are the national Poppy Appeal record-holders.

The area raised its biggest-ever amount through the Poppy Appeal.

The area’s total for the 2007/2008 appeal reached £1m.

The national total was £29m.

County president Bob Mortimer said: “It’s a wonderful total and a testament to the dedication of the collectors and the generosity of everyone who gave.’’

He said the Legion was busier than ever helping people.

The numbers are continually growing with the commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Mortimer said: “The Legion spends £84m a year helping ex-Service personnel and their dependents.

“The main expenditure is welfare and that is growing.

“It can be anything from providing a stairlift to helping a veteran’s grandchildren through college.’’
