A popular councillor has decided not to seek re-election for health reasons.

Ashbrow’s Clr Cath Harris has decided to stand down at May’s local elections.

The Labour councillor, who rose up to become a Cabinet member and briefly deputy leader, has served on Kirklees Council for eight years and brought an education background to her role.

Last week the Labour party chose lawyer Amanda Pinnock as the candidate for the Ashbrow seat.

Clr Harris said: “‘I have thoroughly enjoyed the eight years that I have represented the people of Ashbrow and the wider community of Kirklees.

I am particularly proud of the improvements of Kirklees children, their achievements through their own efforts and the people who work with them.

“I expect to be able to resume my voluntary work in the area later on this year.

“The people of Ashbrow deserve the best representation from a dedicated team of councillors. I know that Amanda Pinnock will have the level of support that I have enjoyed throughout my time in office.”

Amanda Pinnock is a 40-year-old lawyer who has practised in criminal and civil law, currently working in housing law.

She lives in the ward with her husband and teenage daughter.

Amanda spoke fondly of the outgoing councillor, saying: “Cath is much loved in our community and of course I would not have sought to stand unless she had decided it was time for her to step aside for a while.

She is a hard act to follow but I have always loved working with people to help resolve their problems and I look forward to working with colleague’s to continue to improve the area in general.”
