A Post Office worker stole money from an elderly customer suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, a court heard.

Dawn Midgley, of Priory Way, Mirfield, took a total of £1,000 out of 73-year-old Sheila Boylan’s account over three separate dates.

Midgley was caught after confessing the thefts to a colleague.

The 45-year-old said that she was deep in dept and been forced to turn to a payday loan company.

Kirklees magistrates told her she faces sentencing by a crown court judge on November 4 after taking advantage of vulnerable Mrs Boylan.

The court heard that Mrs Boylan, who uses a wheelchair, regularly made withdrawals from the Post Office based at Food Fair in Mirfield.

Prosecutor James Weekes said she would leave her card with staff to take the cash out of her account.

But on August 7, one of the workers became suspicious Midgley was withdrawing more than she was authorised to.

Midgley later resigned from her job but police were called.

When officers searched her home they found two store receipts in a shredder, showing withdrawals of £400 from Mrs Boylan’s account on April 12 and then £250 on April 13.

Mike Sisson-Pell, mitigating, said that his client had accepted that her victim was particularly vulnerable because of her physical and mental difficulties.
