HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman has backed the Make Poverty History lobby.

He made his pledge when he met Huddersfield University students in London.

He said: "The Make Poverty History campaign is a crucial voice in realising debt relief and fair trade in countries in Africa and throughout the world.

"I will continue to support the movement. I have signed the Fair, Just, and Free Trade Early Day Motion - along with many parliamentary colleagues - to create a fair and just trading system that is so central to eradicating poverty.

"The meeting I held last year in Huddersfield with International Development Secretary Hilary Benn highlighted the strong support in our town for trade justice.

"Each year I receive a large amount of correspondence on this issue and I am again pleased to give my full support to the campaign."

John Bell, the university Students' Union disabilities officer, who went to London to lobby Mr Sheerman, said: "It is reassuring to know that trade justice is one of Mr Sheerman's personal priorities and high up on the political agenda."
