A FAULTY power cable blacked out a big part of the Holme Valley.

A power surge is thought to have sparked the problem on a telegraph pole in a field off Wheat Close in Holme just before 7.30pm last night.

Holmfirth firefighters were called to stand by as a precaution, but there was no fire.

A choir's singers completed their rehearsal by torchlight at Holmbridge Parish Church.

Nicky Green, a member of Vocal Expressions, said: "It was quite fun. We used torches and candles.

"We went to the pub afterwards and the power was still off when we left at 10.30."

Crew manager Richard Robinson, of Holmfirth fire station, said: "It was reported to us as power cables down, but they were still intact.

"It looks like the cable had simply blown."

Yorkshire Electricity Distribution engineers fixed the problem.

* An electricity substation was badly damaged after it developed a serious fault.

Electrical equipment inside was damaged when something blew at the substation on West Street in Savile Town, Dewsbury, shortly before 11am yesterday.
