HUNDREDS of people suffered the misery of a Sunday without power in a Huddersfield village.

The electricity went off in 51 homes at Birdsedge yesterday morning and engineers battled in vain to solve the problem throughout the day.

Homes that lost their power were on Penistone Road, Park Head and Park Lane.

Birds Edge resident Steve Catchpool said: “We believe it to be a major problem. There will be a lot of homes without their Yorkshire pudding today.

“At first we were told the electricity might be restored at 12.30pm and then 1pm, but we were still off into the early evening.’’

A spokesman for Yorkshire Electricity Distribution said: “The problem was reported to us at 9.52am and we realised there was a fault with an underground cable.

“Our engineers are on site trying to locate the fault and the aim is to get all the homes back on by midnight.’’
