DOZENS of homes in Honley were without power for several hours after a fire in an underground cable.
Holmfirth firefighters were called to Moor Bottom near the centre of the village shortly before 9am on Saturday to discover there had been a fire in a manhole cover.
Watch commander Mike Lee, from Holmfirth fire station, said: “The fire was in a manhole cover which was at the junction of three electricity supplies from three substations that had shorted out and caught fire.
“We made the area safe and then waited for electricity engineers to arrive.’’
Firefighters directed traffic the wrong way round the roundabout at the junction of Moor Bottom, Westgate and Thirstin Road while engineers worked to resolve the problem.
