ENERGY-SAVING solar panels will be installed on a council office building in Huddersfield town centre.

Work costing £200,000 is due to start on Monday at the Civic Centre 3 building.

Sixteen solar thermal panels will provide about 60% of the hot water needed for the building.

Solar electricity panels will generate about 11,500kWh of electricity per year. As well as being used by the building, some of the power will be fed into the local network.

Kirklees Council's deputy leader Clr John Smithson said: "Kirklees residents have said that the council should take a lead by putting solar panels on its own buildings.

"We agree - and this project is the first example of us doing just that."

European funding is paying for a third of the project with the rest coming from the council's renewable energy fund.
