POSTIES in Huddersfield have won praise for getting the mail out more quickly.

Last year they were managing to get 89.2% of first class mail delivered by the next day in the period from April to September. The latest figures are showing a sharp improvement to 94.2% in the same period this year.

It puts them comfortably ahead of the Royal Mail national target of 93%.

In the WF postcode area, 93.4% of first class post arrives the next day. In the HX zone, the figure is 92.6%.

Judith Donovan, chairman of Postwatch Northern England, said: "It is no coincidence that Royal Mail is improving its performance in advance of the UK's postal market being fully opened up to competition in January 2006.

"It demonstrates how effective competition is in delivering value to customers."
