HUDDERSFIELD'S water provider is the most efficient water company in the country.

Water industry regulator Ofwat awarded Yorkshire Water a four A-star rating for the efficiency of its water and waste operations.

An Ofwat report, which looked at water and sewerage unit costs and efficiency, analysed costs from 2003 to 2004 and assessed how each company had performed operationally.

Yorkshire Water's director of regulation and investment Richard Ackroyd, said: "Being the first water company to achieve four A grades for efficiency is fantastic news, not only for us but for our customers. We have achieved Band A status for both clean and waste water operations, even though we have one of the lowest average bills in the industry.

"We have also been able to pay for an investment programme worth more than £300m a year."

The rating comes as an extra boost for the company, which was also named Utility Company of the Year in 2004.
