IT is not often road workers get praise – but a Lindley man says for one team, credit should be given where it is due.

Ken Winter, of Lindley, has praised a team of contractors working for Kirklees Council highways department, who were resurfacing the A629 Halifax Road over the weekend.

Mr Winter said: “On Sunday they worked non-stop from 7am until after 7pm resurfacing Halifax Road in searing heat.

“While I went first to morning mass at St Patrick’s and came home to watch the end of the Tour de France, the highways team worked on without a break.”

He said the work on one of Huddersfield’s main routes had been well-planned to cause minimum disruption to commuters and residents.

He said: “This big job has been well managed, with roadside warnings set out four weeks in advance, warning letters to all the neighbours, and work scheduled for weekends to avoid weekday disruption.

“It is a credit to Kirklees Council’s Graham Mallory, who is group engineer, and Clr David Hall, the council Cabinet member for transportation.”

Clr Hall said: “It is always nice, particularly for the staff who put in the hard work, for them to get praise for their efforts.

“Everyone knows that the day in question was the warmest day of the year, and I cannot think that anyone would have been wanting to be working in hot conditions to be re-laying a road.

“This is the level of service we aim to provide all the time and giving people the maximum information well in advance is essential, so that they can plan their own lives around the work that is so necessary to maintain our road network.”
